Fruit Rescue !
Fruit Rescue is a brilliantly simple way to get beautiful locally grown fruit to the community!
Fruit trees produce a huge amount of fantastic food. However, it can be difficult to pick! Some trees can produce a crop so large that it can't all be picked, or people don't have the time or energy to do it. The result is that every year tonnes of food goes to waste. At the same time our shops often sell expensive fruit from overseas.
We would like to change this and have been gathering volunteers who offer to pick unwanted fruit from local trees. We then distibute it, for free, to the community. It is great fun picking the fruit with friends and brilliant to be able to give the fruit away (see the photo!).
This year we picked hundreds of apples and distributed them at the community centre and on the High Street in North Berwick. Any apples that were left over were made into pies, jellies and chutney so nothing went to waste. Next year we are hoping to make Fruit Rescue even bigger and pick more kinds of food, including wild foods such as seabuckthorn and mushrooms.
If you have a tree that you would like our volunteers to harvest, giving you a share and distributing the rest to the community, then we would love to hear from you. And there is no need to wait until the fruit is ready to be picked, if you like we can add you to our growing list of fruit donors today! email transitionnb@googlemail.com. If you want to help pick then get in touch too!
